No kidding! Climate change spreads to Jupiter, Mars
Turbulent storms leaving spots on big planet, ice caps retreating on red planet
..TR> ..TABLE>
Does Al Gore know about this?
While the former vice president is leading the charge for drastically changing the way humans do business in a bid to avert catastrophic, man-made global warming, scientists reported today there is noticeable climate change taking place on Jupiter, too.
The news follows reports as far back as three years ago that ice caps on Mars are also retreating much as some of the ice in the Earth's Arctic circle.
There's one striking difference between Earth and the other two planets, however. Neither Jupiter or Mars has any people – and no artificial activity creating so-called "greenhouse gases" like carbon dioxide.
Increased turbulence and storms first observed on Jupiter more than two years ago are still raging, according to astronomers from the University of California, Berkeley, and the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii, who snapped high-resolution pictures of the planet earlier this month.
Captured with NASA's Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the 10-meter Keck II telescope, this so-called "major upheaval" on Jupiter involves stunning changes in the planet's atmosphere, said lead astronomer Imke de Pater, professor of astronomy at UC Berkeley.
The new images, the first since Jupiter emerged from its passage behind the Sun, may show that Jupiter indeed is undergoing a major climate change, as predicted four years ago.
"One of the most notable changes we observe in both the Hubble and Keck images is the change from a rather bland, quiescent band surrounding the Great Red Spot just over a year ago to one that is incredibly turbulent at both sides of the spot," de Pater said. "During all previous HST observations and spacecraft encounters, starting with Voyager in 1979, such turbulence was seen only on the west or left side of the spot."

According to Philip S. Marcus, a professor of fluid dynamics at UC Berkeley, analysis of the Hubble and Keck images may support his 2004 conjecture that Jupiter is in the midst of global climate change that will alter temperatures by as much as 10 degrees Celsius, getting warmer near the equator and cooler near the south pole. He predicted that large changes would start in the southern hemisphere around 2006, causing the jet streams to become unstable and spawn new vortices.
"The appearance of the planet's cloud system from just north of the equator down to 34 degrees south latitude keeps surprising us with changes and, in particular, with new cloud features that haven't been previously observed," Marcus said. "Whether or not Jupiter's climate has changed due to a predicted warming, the cloud activity over the last two and a half years shows dramatically that something unusual has happened."
Mars, too, is being hit by rapid climate change and it is happening so fast that the red planet could lose its southern ice cap, according to scientists.
Scientists from NASA say that Mars has warmed by about 0.5C since the 1970s. This is similar to the warming experienced on Earth over approximately the same period.
Since there is no known life on Mars it suggests rapid changes in planetary climates could be natural phenomena.
The Mars Phoenix probe is scheduled to touch down on the red planet around 7:53 Eastern Time Sunday. If all goes well, it will land near the red planet's north pole. There, it will sample the ice that lies just beneath the surface. On-board instruments will analyze the ice and will look for signs of life.
"By landing on the northern plains, we're looking at active processes that are taking place today," says Peter Smith, the scientist in charge of the operation. "And these active processes have to do with the expansion and contraction of that ice. We're going to see climate change written into the soils."

Becoming Spiritually Fluid

THE WAY IT IS - Everyone has their version of the ‘way that it is’. We all find a way to define our world or reality. Once that is accomplished, we can form belief systems that will support our version of the ‘way that it is’. All of our life experiences pass through the fine mesh filters of our own beliefs to emerge on the other side as our truths.
THE CLASSIC QUEST - Finding our own truth of the ‘way that it is’, can often take a lifetime. We embark on the journey of discovery and questioning: Who Am I? How did I get here? Why am I here? What is my purpose? This becomes the classic quest of our own eternal soul. And so our journey begins. The only challenge occurs when – through no fault of anyone – we question everything and everyone outside ourselves, in search of our answers. We may even think we find ‘the way that it is’ in a particular spiritual path, or different spiritual teachers. Then our belief says we have found the ‘way that it is’ and it is perfect.
That usually works – until we realize that we are still searching, still finding something not complete. We begin to question our path, our teachers, and everything else in our lives – only to remain questioning our own questions.
Once we discover that we are unable to find the answers outside of ourselves, we can begin to create a reality that works. This can become the framework of our conscious mind. We will perfect this ‘way that it is’ to make sure that everything fits, that all our questions are answered and that our life seems to work. We relax, feel secure in this reality and just know that we have this whole thing called ‘LIFE’ figured out. Now we have arrived – we can feel in control of ourselves and proud of our accomplishments. This is a very good point to begin.
DETACHMENT - However, if we become attached to the ‘way that it is’, we can become rigid in our own thoughts and ideas. Rather than feeling free and liberated, we become trapped in self-righteousness and spiritual arrogance. If this occurs, it may be quite awhile before we realize that we are not experiencing any new growth, new insights, new creations – we are stuck in the reality of our fixed self. The reality of this new life circumstance then begins our search for the space of knowing and not knowing – the simultaneous existence of being in the moment and remaining flexible for change and choice. When this happens, we are reminded to become spiritually fluid.
We can not begin our experience on this planet to grow, expand into the vastness of our soul’s vision, discover who we are as multidimensional Divine beings, and use that discovery to serve our planet and its’ inhabitants until we become fluid. After all, how can we remain in the old version of the ‘way that it is’ when everything around us is constantly changing and moving ? And – how do we recognize that we are stuck ?
INDICATORS OF BEING STUCK - The first indicator comes when we find we have a need to be right. Being right has been important in some arenas, because it ensures us a position of power and approval. The need for approval - based on some of our old programs - translates to our feeling accepted and loved; which in turn means that we are not alone. This is how important being right can be for some. This is also how we can get stuck in the energy of our old ‘way’.
The second issue for us is our need to stay in control. We will use control to create a predictable life with no surprises or negative unknowns. It goes hand in hand with the need to be right, both producing a sense of power and security. We will know that we are stuck in our ‘way that it is’, when we have the need to prove or justify our truth. The key word is, need. We will find ourselves defending our thoughts and position around our beliefs. We may become frustrated or angry when someone doesn’t understand us. We then feel unsupported, which makes us react even more.
If we are attached to our beliefs and truths, seeing them as the only ‘way that it is’, we will limit the infinite possibilities that can come to us and therefore limit our experience. Moving past the need to be at the center of our own universe, we discover the balance between knowing and not knowing, which allows us to be spirituality fluid.
FINDING BALANCE - There are ways to finding this balance. We can begin by cultivating compassion. Everyone has their version of the ‘way that it is’ and for many people, they have needed it just to survive. We can have unconditional compassion for where they are, for their own creations. They are Creators, just like us.
One of the easiest ways to finding our balance and to maintain a clearer vibration is to think of ourselves as Liquid Light. Remember, water does not stop its movement or flow. Even when faced with a boulder in the river, water goes over or around the obstacle without hesitation. As the research of Dr. Masaru Emoto has proven, our thoughts, emotions, feelings, or ideas have a resultant effect on the structure of water. As our bodies are mostly water, liquid vibration, our multidimensional cells are directly affected by our thoughts, emotions, feelings and ideas. Liquid Light is the same feeling that one feels when they connect with Spirit.
First, we experience ourselves as Liquid Light, fluid and adaptable. Then we can add a color to that light, (a color that represents what we feel is our essence). By thinking of ourselves as Liquid Light combined with our chosen spiritual color, we can change how we perceive ourselves and the ways in which others also perceive us. In this way, we can begin unconditional acceptance of ourselves – compassion for self. That is the direct compass towards the unconditional love needed for true healing and pure creative vulnerability.

Lightworkers
Much of our thinking takes the form of self-talk—conversations we have with ourselves, inside our minds. If you look at your own thinking, you will find that a good proportion of it is concerned with meeting a need of some kind or another—the needs for security, approval, love, companionship, status, respect, control, stimulus, comfort, etc.. This, as so many spiritual teachers have pointed out, is the root of our much of our suffering. By telling ourselves that things need to be different, we create a sense of discontent, a dis-ease. Careful observation of the mind reveals that focusing on a particular thought limits our perception. We become lost in thought, unaware of much is what going on around us, and also what is going on within us. A mind caught up in self-talk is less likely to notice how it is feeling, or how the body feels. Moreover, all this thinking results in a background mental tension. There is a sense of tightness in the mind, a constriction in our consciousness.

The Roots of Thinking
by Peter Russell
peterrussell. com
______________________________
Clearly, the original root of this verbal thinking is speech. Speech gave humans the ability to communicate with each other, share experiences, learn from each other, and amass a collective body of knowledge. Using verbal language within our own minds brought many new abilities, including the abilities to rehearse what we might say to another, to recall past conversations, and to plan future actions.
This gave us a whole new way of meeting our needs. We can understand the world around us, how it works, and take steps to improve our circumstances. This is the present root of so much of our thinking.
Looking more closely, you will find that many of these thoughts concern imagined needs—things we imagine we need in order to be happy. We imagine we need someone to regard us in a good light, or we need some new clothes, or we need to eat some gourmet food. These are not true needs; they are "wants" or desires, or in some cases simply preferences. But still they occupy our thoughts.
When we believe we need such things or situations in order to be happy, we become fixated upon getting them, and this leads to no end of thinking about how to get the world to be the way we believe it ought to be.
This is the sad joke about human beings. We all want to find greater contentment, but many of us are so busy worrying about whether or not we will be content sometime in the future, we never allow ourselves to be content in the present. Instead, our minds become preoccupied with planning and scheming, worry and anxiety, hopes and fantasies. And, when things don't turn out the way we think they should, we easily fall into anger, grievance, judgment, or depression.
When we do manage to get whatever it is we think we want, we may indeed feel better. But we feel better, not because that particular thing has made us feel better, but because we have, for the moment, stopped creating a sense of discontent. We are no longer disturbing ourselves. But before too long we find something else that is missing, and again fall into discontent. And again start thinking about what we might do to make things the way we want.
The world's mystical traditions repeatedly affirm that the mind in its natural state—that is, before it is filled with thoughts, worries, plans, and regrets—is a mind that is at ease. When we are no longer caught in the "story" of the thought, and our attention comes to rest in natural mind, we become aware of that which was always there, behind all the many forms—the field of pure consciousness from which all thinking emerges. We awaken to the omnipresent root of all thinking. There, beneath all our thinking, we find the freedom, contentment, and ease, that we had sought through all our thinking.

From Cynthia McKinney: On My Way to Gaza
Hello!
First of all, I have to thank FreeGaza. org and Paul Larudee for tracking me down to extend the invitation to travel to Gaza to learn first-hand of the situation there, particularly since I had spoken out on it during the trip to Damascus to deliver my remarks and that never happened. I've since learned that one other US resident was delayed for three hours at the airport as she attempted to make it to Damascus. Seems I was being too kind to the ticket agents who seemed truly confused about where I was going and what I needed in order to get there--never once allowing me to proceed to security and to my transfer point, which was Paris. I thank her for letting me know that she, too, had the exact same experience with the ticket agents. She did, however, get to board her plane and made it safely to Damascus to participate in the event marking the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Right of Return contained in it.
Ooops, I knew I wasn't going to have much time to write. I will connect with you again when I can. I understand the undertaking that I am now involved in: humanitarian relief--medical supplies--to the residents of Gaza. I am being called to board my flight. I am now in Prague, first stop on a journey from which I hope to return and be able to tell you more.
Oh, by the way, I asked the young people here if they remembered Prague Summer, the Brezhnev Doctrine, or if they wanted protection by the U.S. with a missile shield. No, they don't remember Prague Summer; no, they don't remember the Brezhnev Doctrine, and no, they don't want to be protected by the U.S.

The shock, awe and heart attacks that followed Madoff's confession that he was 'running a Ponzi scheme' drew as much anger for the money lost and the fall from the moneyed class as for the embarrassment of knowing that the world's biggest exploiters and smartest swindlers on Wall Street, were completely 'taken' by one of their own. Not only did they suffer big losses but their self-image of themselves as rich because they are so smart and of 'superior stock' was utterly shattered: They saw themselves as suffering the same fate as all the schmucks they had previously swindled, exploited and dispossessed in their climb to the top. There is nothing worse for the ego of a respectable swindler than to be trumped by a bigger swindler. As a result, a number of the biggest losers have so far refused to give their names or the amount they lost, working instead through lawyers fighting off other losers.
--James Petras
"And advanced forms of biological warfare that can 'target' specific genotypes may transform biological warfare from the realm of terror to a politically useful tool."
--PNAC, Rebuilding America's Defenses, p. 60
The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps, of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to doctrinaire and academic thinkers. Instead, the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can "throw the rascals out" at any election without leading to any profound or extensive shifts in policy.

Consumer Boycott
http://www.bdsmovement.net/?q=node/9#diy
Aims | Why | Do it yourself
Individual consumers can show their opposition to Israel's project by participating in a consumer boycott of Israeli goods and services. A consumer boycott works in two ways: firstly by generating bad publicity for the offender and secondly by applying economic pressure for change.
The Israeli barcode starts with 729
Individual consumers can show their opposition to Israel's project by participating in a consumer boycott of Israeli goods and services. A boycott can also put pressure on companies whose exports are linked to some of the most evident aspects of the Israeli occupation and apartheid.
Agrexco export fruit and vegetables for sale all over Europe and the US under the trade name Carmel. Much of its produce is grown on confiscated Palestinian land in the Jordan Valley, and the Israeli government owns 51% of the company. Jaffa Oranges were famous for centuries before Israelis successfully colonised the Palestinian name along with the city of Yafa. Continues...

Motorola, as well as producing mobile phones, also manufacture wireless data networks for military bases and battlefield communications systems. Much of the cutting-edge technology contained in products such as mobile phones, computers and software is developed in the manufacture of military services and goods. Products developed to meet the needs of the Israeli military have a reputation for reliability, having been tried and tested on Palestinians.
Tel-Aviv is the global hub of a trade with considerable moral and ethical implications having consistently fuelled conflicts, wars and oppression throughout Africa. Many of the globes major dealers use Tel Aviv as the processing point for a trade which makes a major contribution to the Israeli economy. Consumers in Arab countries have begun to raise their voices in recent years. Tired with their US-backed governments, they have taken the isolation of Israel into their own hands – creating enormous losses especially for US producers complicit in the occupation of Palestine. In the West, consumers are growing more and more aware of the products they buy and the food they eat. In the UK a survey conducted in 2005 for the Co-Op bank revealed that over half of the questioned consumers stated that they had avoided buying products from a company on the basis of its reputation. Boycotts are big business, and it is vital that the international public are made aware of the moral and ethical dimension of buying Israeli goods.
While boycott is an individual act, it becomes only powerful if it is promoted collectively and finds strong support in organizations and movements willing to promote the boycott. It is important that you find allies and choose your targets well. In the primary boycott, consumers boycott products from Israeli companies. A secondary boycott means avoiding goods produced by companies with a significant business interest in Israel or containing parts produced by Israel. It includes boycott of companies whose management uses the profits and the power of the company to promote Israeli colonial policies of occupation and apartheid. Multinationals such as Nestle to Estee Lauder are notable examples of multinationals guilty of lending vital support to the Occupation. Continues...
Activists picketing a Carmel-Agrexo distribution centre in the UK
The 'secondary boycott' approach was used successfully by consumers opposing apartheid in South Africa. By the time Barclays' Bank (UK) had pulled out of apartheid South Africa, its share of the student market had plummeted from 27% to 15%. The sheer number of companies involved with the Israeli economy means that for practical reasons, a boycott must focus on strategic targets of particular significance, such as: Produce that is symbolic of its origin from Israel e.g. fruit, vegetables, cut flowers; Companies and individuals who are actively working to promote the Zionist agenda; Companies that can be an easy and global target for their obvious benefit to the Occupation such as Agrexco.
1. Don't buy Israeli goods
This is easier than it sounds and a list of common products from Israeli companies can be found on a series of websites listed in the Resource section. You could also send a letter to the supermarket, the media and local political parties in your country informing them of your decision and the reasons.
2. Identify and lobby retail outlets that stock Israeli goods: Outlets that stock Israeli goods can be lobbied to break off such business relations in response to Israeli policies. You can send letters to local shops and large retailers asking them to de-shelve Israeli products. Find organizations and networks that would be willing to endorse the letter in order to achieve a more powerful effect.
3. Boycott and picket outlets that do not respond to lobbying
Where outlets continue to sell Israeli goods, go a step further and write informing them that you will no longer shop there. Organiza a picket of the shop and distribute campaign materials informing people of the BDS campaign.
4. Set up a local campaign and website promoting the boycott
Spread the word about the BDS campaign. Useful material, fact sheets and resources can be taken straight from the BDS website for you to set up your own local campaign. You could also provide a blacklist of outlets in the local area that are refusing to stop selling Israeli goods.
5. Further steps
Organise pickets and blockades of the transportation of Israeli produce; Encourage shop workers, dockworkers and others to refuse to handle Israeli goods; Putting out public information about companies' use of Israeli technology and components; Create a Buycott alternative, promoting ethical alternatives to Israeli goods and reward companies who publicly distance themselves from the Israeli economy with greater levels of trade.

Love and Gratitude to: LINELLA BRECKENRIDGE ![]() Most people come to meditation thinking, or even fearing, that it is difficult. No matter how much some people rave about the benefits of meditation, many think it would be easier to relax by merely playing a sport, reading a book, grabbing a drink, watching TV, or doing any number of things that don't require much effort. Meditation does require some effort, or personal discipline, and it takes up the most precious commodity in our lives -- time. Yet, to derive all of the benefits takes practice. So why go to all the trouble of learning to meditate? Isn't it all too hard? The short answer is that learning to meditate will invariably help your well-being. One of the best answers is that you will feel the benefits almost immediately, which is definitely one of the greatest aspects of meditation. I like to think of meditation as an insurance policy to protect your most precious asset -- your mind. The core benefit of meditation is that it's a proven way to truly rest and clear your mind. We know how important it is to rest our body. We could not keep going for days on end without resting. We do not work most machines continuously without giving them a rest, for fear they might heat up and explode. But somehow, when it comes to resting our minds, we imagine the same laws don't apply. Most people consider sleep to be the best way to rest and rejuvenate their minds. But a growing problem in today's world is that sleep does not equal rest for many people. And the lack of mental rest is not merely caused by lack of sleep, because when we sleep, we keep processing information from the day or other issues that needed but did not get our attention. In essence, we still use our minds during sleep. It is not easy to give the mind the real rest it craves. We also have the notion that we can rest our minds when we go on vacation or just take time away from our normal life. How many times have you been on vacation, sitting on a lovely beach or walking in the green hills somewhere, when suddenly -- pop! -- up comes some worry or concern? How often has the stress of day-to-day life reemerged in your head the minute your relaxing vacation was over? What is happening is that -- despite attempts to relax, distract, and slow down -- the mind still processes problems in your conscious and unconscious spheres. To truly stop the clutter and "traffic," we need to control our flow of thoughts and our brain waves. Meditation is a way to do just that. Through meditation we develop the skills and power to relax and clear our minds, and through this comes rest and a great many more benefits. Many of us are paid to use our minds to add value to the organizations and communities we work in. To do this, we must have the clarity to make better decisions and the ability to focus our minds to the task at hand, so that we use more of our mental capacities. By actively training these two areas by meditating, we can enhance our careers and offer more value. It is in moments of decision-making when we add or destroy value to ourselves and the people around us. The decisions may be large or small, but theoretically, for each of them, we gather as much information as we can, analyze that information, weigh our options, and make a decision. Some decisions may involve spending vast sums of money that carry huge consequences for the lives and livelihoods of many people. Other decisions might concern how to better serve a client's needs. If you work in the medical profession or in law enforcement, your decisions sometimes involve life and death. And, astonishingly, these decisions often need to be made rapidly, sometimes in a matter of minutes or seconds. The most important factor in effective and sound decision-making is clarity of mind. If your mind is full of mental noise or distracting thoughts, then it will have to work harder, and take longer, to process information and make decisions. Additionally, if we have unconstructive emotions bubbling up inside us, our minds will likely feel fatigued, and our decisions won't necessarily be congruent with our internal values. Instead, our decisions will be based on the mental clutter whirring around in our minds. Once you establish a sustained meditation practice, you become aware of the mental chatter and more adept at clearing it. You have the tools to develop some space to perceive a situation with greater clarity before you make any crucial decisions. The time needed to create this mental space is not hours or days; it is, literally, a few moments.
